Why Prefab Failed... Again
As a concept, prefabricated housing seems to make so much sense that it's a wonder why all houses aren't built with prefab techniques and methods. I thought the prefab manufacturing methods had finally reached a level of efficiency that would enable mass customization, but it was brought to my attention just last week, that one of the most well-known players in the prefab housing industry was shuttering its doors. So what happened?

Environmental Whimsy
A North Carolina State University student named Joseph Carnevale stole orange construction barrels to construct this street art he called Barrel Monster. Where the routine often becomes invisible, Carnevale and artists like Banksy play off of this phenomenon, creating murals and sculptures that effectively cause passersby to do a double take. And as designers, whether we're working in print, digital, product or environment, we too are largely in the business of making the invisible visible.
Curating Innovation
I was lucky enough to be a part of Flashbelt this year. Flashbelt is a conference about and for media artists, interactive designers and web programmers, and Dave Schroeder curated an amazing experience. Art vs. Commerce
Art could be said to represent freedom of ideas and expression, while design is dictated by needs. But as the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition "Making Space" increasingly attempts to merge media in a "fascinating barometer of changing artistic tastes," I have to ask, how comfortably do these two disciplines sit side by side? And, in both art and commerce, does the brand now count for more than the idea?

Behind a Museum Treasure Hunt
The Aernout Mik exhibition at MoMA appears to be impulsively dispersed throughout the museum, interrupting the normal placid and calculated flow of the visitor experience. Though in reality, each piece is tactically placed to relate to its specific location, taking into account the visitor flow in the museum—and almost casting onlookers as part of each piece. I interviewed Ingrid Chou and Samuel Sherman of MoMA's in-house design team about their process and rationale.

Interactive Data Visualizations
I've been thinking a lot recently about the growing popularity and potential of interactive data visualizations as feedback mechanisms on the world around us. Over the past few weeks, I've had the pleasure of talking with Stamen Design's Tom Carden and Dopplr's Boris Anthony, two talented designers who are both well-steeped in the information visualization space, about why we're starting to see more of them and where they see it all going.
Reshaping Surf Culture
In the last few weeks I've noticed surfboard stories cropping up in unusual places. While most surfing articles center around the sport and its heroes, this recent coverage has focused instead on the builders behind the scenes, shaping their boards using nontraditional materials and design techniques—and reshaping the direction of surfing.

Communicate Function with Form
Modern electronics have completely broken out of the "form follows function" convention. Most of the work on function is done on user interface, so form is now liberated from its ties to function. I would disagree that form follows function is entirely irrelevant though, because as we adapt to the digital age, there are still ways to communicate function physically.

Here we take a look at the people and companies behind some of the biggest and most critically acclaimed apps of the past year. Those responsible talk about the creative spark and technical challenges that drove their creations and weigh in on the development of the mobile landscape and the big picture prospects for apps.
Check out Brushes iPhone app creator Steven Sprang with Kyte's Daniel Graf and iPhoneDevCamp's Raven Zachary on the What's Next in Mobile panel at our tech event CaT, this Wednesday.
Research First, Iterate Less
Because the web provides functionality to test every variation of a banner ad for effectiveness, the next big thing is tailoring advertising in the moment, and leveraging findings from click-thru rates to construct more relevant offerings for consumers. Coming from a research-heavy design consultancy, I believe this effort represents, not a huge step forward, but a band-aid placed over a much larger issue.
The Ontological Argument on Design
Is that which exists in reality greater than that which exists in the mind? At the SEGD conference in San Diego, Brian Collins was moderating a debate about and between so-called "thinkers" and "doers" in design. I hear this topic come up a lot. There are constant status battles between conceptual thinkers and designers/builders/makers/programmers.

Obsessed with Seymour Chwast
All said, this review of Seymour Chwast's new book is biased... I'm obsessed with Seymour. That aside, I also had a chance to interview him.
Guerrilla goes Pop-up
Guerrilla marketing, the original anti-establishment tactic using word-of-mouth recommendation, ambient advertising, hard-to-find stores and harder to get into restaurants, has morphed into the soft-sounding "pop-up," which is more palatable for the mainstream. And pop-ups have been popping up all over here in London. The concept, describing short term events or stores that arrive mostly unannounced to create brand theatre, is hastily being borrowed, adopted and adapted by all types of brands for their own, individual means and is rapidly extending the scope of experiential branding.
The Integrated Production White Paper
Creativity's first White Paper goes deep on digital and integrated production processes.
Rate the Ad: Ariel: Torture
Print ads from India depict clothing getting tortured like the prisoners at Gitmo.
Hand Craft
Is craft a classist tradition, available to the upper echelon exclusively in custom work and limited editions? How do you make craft democratic? It could be that it requires a mass production partner. Take Hella Jongerius' wall coverings for the 2009 IKEA PS Collection.

Firstborn has hired David Snyder (pictured), former creative director of Colorado-based interactive agency FL2, as associate creative director to work alongside its creative director Joon Park. ... Story has signed George Tillman Jr., director of the recent biopic Notorious, for commercial representation.
The Design Lifestyle
Much of design is like training. It can be hard to see the benefits from one project to the next, or one unappreciative client to another, and easy to forget the reason why you chose this profession over something else. I see design as a lifestyle. When it starts to feel too much like work I grow impatient and frustrated. And I need the design equivalent of a soul ride.

Going Back to Brand Roots
Is reveling in our past really the way to move forward? Brand attempts to comfort in tough times with nostalgic design reminds us how much more personal the relationships between brands and their public have become. These campaigns encourage us that our long-term relationships with consumers really have mattered and that they're now listening as we forge ahead. But this marketing equivalent to a hug-to-make-it-better can only be short term.

The Art of Sponsorship
Innovation can be expensive and I'd much rather help brands sponsor great contributions to society than create another commercial or billboard. Sponsorships can transform our physical and virtual worlds into more entertaining, inspiring and interesting places to be in, and here are some examples of how it's been done.
AmazonEncore vs. Harper Collins' Authonomy
Amazon is in a better position to win with its new self-publishing service than old-school book publishing houses. Perhaps the counter-intuitive way to save the publishing industry is to love books a little less, to cooperate instead of compete and to explore new vehicles for content.
