Creativity 50 2010: Andrey Ternovskiy
Andrey Ternovskiy, Founder, ChatrouletteBy: Andrew Hampp, Published: Mar 05, 2010
It should come as no surprise that Chatroulette, the instantly popular site that connects users via webcam to strangers anywhere in the world, was founded by a 17-year-old Russian boy. A quick perusal of the site will quickly reveal that the site's target audience is directly on par with Mr. Ternovskiy's demographic. Unfortunately in the post-MySpace/Craigslist crime era, there are few females to be found at all—among the three we spotted, one simply held up a handwritten sign that said "Jesus does love U" as Jay-Z blared in the background. A conflicting message, to be sure, but one that speaks volumes about the immediacy of social connections that Chatroulette has only accelerated.
The only substantial connection we made during our spin on Chatroulette was with a user who filmed their iTunes playlist instead of their face. Maybe Chatroulette isn't the next coming of Craigslist or the video chat-room—maybe it's the next Pandora or Last.FM.
