Creativity 50 2013: James Sommerville
VP Global Design, Coca-ColaBy: Natalie Zmuda, Published: Jun 05, 2013
James Sommerville has big shoes to fill. The founder of Attik, a global creative agency acquired by Dentsu in 2007, was recently tapped as the VP-global design at Coca-Cola and now leads global design for the world’s-largest beverage company. He fills a role that has only been held by one other person—David Butler, who has been much lauded for his success rethinking the company’s approach to design, from the contour aluminum bottle to the futuristic Freestyle vending machine.
Mr. Sommerville joined Coca-Cola in April, though it’s not the first time he’s worked for the brand. During his time as executive creative director at Attik—he departed last year—he led the team behind the company’s overhaul of the Coke brand identity. He also designed visual identify systems for several key Coca-Cola events, including the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, 2010 London Olympics and 2014 FIFA World Cup Brasil.
