Creativity 50:
Maurizio Cattelan, Artist

Creativity, straight from the gut

Maurizio Cattelan's "All" retrospective at the Guggenheim displayed 128 pieces of quintessential Cattelaniaâ€"among them Pope John Paul II pinned by a meteorâ€"suspended in air over the great rotunda. Context stripped away, sheeted cadavers dangled among a suicidal squirrel, Pinocchio, a dead Kennedy and dinosaur bones like a massively disquieting child's mobile. Or, as the catalog put it, "hung up like laundry to dry." Mr. Cattelan told The Guardian in 2004: "I work more with my stomach than my brain. It is a digestive process."
