Oasis' New Album Gets a Subway Debut

Street musicians in the New York City subway system are the first way for the public to hear songs from Oasis' new record "Dig Out Your Soul."

We tagged along last week when BBH, New York and HSI directing duo the Malloys took to the NYC subways to film street performers debuting Oasis songs.

After time spent with sheet music and audio files of four new songs from the record, the 15 groups gathered in a Greenpoint loft studio with the band in the early afternoon, then fanned out across city to perform.

We joined one of the three units tasked with shooting the event for a documentary to run on NYC & Company. Here's what we saw. Watch more user- and street performer-submitted videos at Oasis' YouTube page. The band also has a group devoted solely to videos of the street performers covering the songs, here.

This feels incredibly average. Anyone could have done this for any band. Not worth documenting or hiring a crew either. Subway musicians are great to listen to for their individual talent - not for playing tribute band. Lastly, it's not like Oasis is even an American band - let alone a NY band, so it doesn't quite fit. BBH is just off lately.

Yes, this could have been done by/for any band. But it hadn't. This group came up with an idea that had not been done to this scale, and backed it by the documentary. I see this as a great publicity tool for the album release. It is memorable, can possible be viral in the "hey I saw this, you should check it out" way, and so what if they are not from NYC. There ARE other places on the far side of the river, & not just in midtown that do influence the arts.
