Rate the Ad: Telstra: Everybody's Talkin'

A classic gets updated.

Published: Feb 27, 2008
Last week's installment of Rate The Ad looked at media retailer fnac's use of the sleeveface trend to push its vinyl selection, with rocker-imposters recreating poses from Jim, Janis and Elvis. "heinous? or just powerful? I like it," comments Alikos. "it might be better with a background that add deeper/stronger meaning to the message." BDavis626 didn't hold back: "Reviving the dead for commercial purposes is one of the most heinous trends in advertising."

We've got another case of creative-go-round this week, though in a different form. For client Telstra's phone and data plan range, Aussie agency BWM updated Harry Nilsson's classic "Everybody's Talkin'" originally written by Fred Neil and the theme for Midnight Cowboy.

So what do you think? Tasteful parody or legacy-polluter? below are lyrics for comparison, the best we could make out.

Original
Everybody's talkin' at me.
I don't hear a word they're sayin',
Only the echoes of my mind.

People stoppin' starin'
I can't see the faces,
Only the shadows of their eyes.

I'm goin where the sun keeps shinin'
Thru the pourin' rain,
Goin' where the weather suits my clothes.

Bankin' off the northeast wind,
Sailin' on a summer breeze,
Skippin' over the ocean like a stone.

Updated
Everybody's talkin' at me.
With my phone and laptop combined.
People conference call me,
I can see their faces,
Send them files anytime.

I'm going home when sun's still shining,
Emailing from the train,
Turbo call the next IP on the go. (ed. ?)

Work's all done, my wife just grins,
Kids tucked up in bed,
How'd I ever get by without it?

Here's the correct updated lyrics...

Everybody's talking at me
I hear every word they're saying
With my phone and laptop combined.

People conference call me
I can see their faces.
Send them files any time.

I'm going home when the sun's still shinning.
Emailing from the train.
Turbo Card and Next IP on the go.

Work's all done, my wife just grinned.
Kids tucked up in bed.
How'd I ever get by without it?

Definitely Tasteful parody and then some. When you consider the target segment, remember this tune brings back ancestral memories, so it provokes a warm feeling even before you start paying attention to lyrics. Besides, these are quite well achieved, keeping the original vowels in place so that the sense of "déją heard" remains. Thumbs up on an excellent piece of work, in a sector where people are going crazy with gimmicks and forgetting the basics.

I believe Legacy-Polluter sums it up nicely. Gross.

Nothing makes me smile like being on the phone from the moment I walk out the door 'til the moment I slip some Jack Daniels into my kid's apple juice to knock him out. Life is good.

This ad is talkin' at me, and that, along with the sappy sentimentalism, is the problem.

Any ad with Ryan Seacrest is a winner in my book!
