Show of Talent

Creativity and Penguin lead a search for America's next great book cover. Check out the 25 finalists.

Published: Sep 18, 2008

As part the first year of Hearts & Minds, Creativity partnered with Penguin Books on a talent contest, asking artists of all types to conceive a cover design for one of the publisher's upcoming titles. Penguin, as you may know, appeared in our Creative Marketers report last year, for bringing an updated art-driven aesthetic to its book covers. Notably, its Graphic Classics have become veritable collectors items, with cover art reimagined by contemporary artists like Frank Miller, Tomer Hanuka, Roz Chast and Art Spiegelman.

Penguin and Sam Taylor, author of The Amnesiac, kindly offered up Taylor's upcoming novel The Island at the End of the World as the foundation of our competition. Designers, illustrators, painters and photographers contributed more than 300 ideas for the cover design of Taylor's new book, and a jury comprised of Penguin editor Alexis Washam, creative director Paul Buckley and Creativity editors selected the 25 finalists presented here.

The winning design will be announced at the Hearts & Minds event in New York on September 25 and will appear on the cover of Taylor's book when it is published in 2009.

Check out the finalists' designs below.

The Island at the End of the World Synopsis:
A chilling novel about the near future, where most of the world has been destroyed by catastrophic floods. As a father and his three children begin to rebuild their lives alone on an island, his youngest son Finn begins to question how they arrived there and why they alone have been spared. Finn's search for understanding takes an unexpected turn when a strange man named Will swims ashore, and he appears to know quite a bit about this family and the circumstances that surrounded the floods. But Finn's father is determined to keep him silent and is willing to do anything to prevent Will from disturbing his family's idyllic life on the island. Sam Taylor's The Island at the End of the World is a riveting post-apocalyptic tale that explores the darkness that lies within the hearts of men.

I like most of the designs. 16 is my favorite. I'm a fan of illustration though.

My faves are 24 and 4. I can appreciate the technique of the winner but the imagery doesn't say "island" in my opinion.

I feel that #2, #16 and #17 are very strong entries. I would have gone with #2 if I was judging this contest: the texture of the image, the muted color palate and use of text placement all stand out. The only critique would of the font, wish the designer had kept the same font for the title and the author's name.

I love the illustration for #16. It gives the cover a vintage feel, which I love but doesn't quite suit the tone of the book.

As we all know now, #17 was the winner and it's a great image, but I would have preferred #2 for the above reasons.
