Cimino joins Y&R Chicago from DDB Chicago, where he spent the past eight years, most recently as the senior vice president, executive creative director and global creative director of McDonald's. He also led DDB's Capital One business and worked on other clients such as Anheuser-Busch, Discover Card, General Mills, Frito Lay, State Farm Insurance and Sierra Mist. Last year, his team contributed to McDonald's impressive showing at Cannes (DDB global earned 13 Lions for the client), and other recent awards include a Gold Effie for McDonald's "Rebuilding an Icon: A Love Story" in the Sustained Success category.
In his new post, Cimino's goal is to keep Y&R a fertile creative hot spot--not just in the midwest, but in the country. "Chicago has a very dynamic advertising community," he said. "It is critically important that Y&R Midwest plays an important role here," he said. "Over the years, the place has a great heritage of creating world class, Cannes-winning work. My goal is ensure that the agency continues to create work on that level, work that will win in a jury room and also in the marketplace. My ultimate goal is for Y&R to be the destination of choice for the most talented creatives out there. Whenever you're doing amazing work, the best talent will come."
Among the McDonald's work Mr. Cimino oversaw at DDB is the memorable "Joe and Frank" spot, which he said "remains McDonald's U.S. CMO Neil Golden's favorite commercial." More recently, he steered another beautiful commercial that tracked how far the scent of a McDonald's fry can go.
During his time at DDB, Mr. Cimino was also creative director on the celebrated Anheuser-Busch Bud Light campaign "Real Men of Genius," which still stands as some of his favorite work. "That was really special," he said. "Not because it was the most awarded radio campaign in advertising history, but because I was able to work alongside Bob Winter, John Immesoete and Mark Gross, some of the most talented creatives you'll ever know. I never laughed harder or had more fun in the studio putting those spots together. It was a blast."
Prior to DDB Chicago, Mr. Cimino served as senior vice president and executive creative director at Foote, Cone & Belding in Southern California and before that worked at Ogilvy & Mather as a copywriter. In a statement, Carter Murray, President and CEO of Y&R North America said, "This is an exciting hire for us. Bill is tremendously gifted, a true leader, and one who consistently creates award-winning work that has a real impact on culture and in the marketplace."
