Last year, Adidas boosted its environmental credentials by announcing a partnership with Parley for the Oceans in which it planned to create a range of sportswear made from recycled plastic from the sea. The actual products have now been unveiled, and include not just shoes (the UltraBOOST Uncaged Parley running shoe) but jerseys that will be worn by top European soccer teams.
Adidas is making 7,000 pairs of the shoes available, featuring a knitted upper created with 95 percent Ocean Plastic and five percent recycled polyester. The laces, heel cap base material, heel webbing, heel lining and the sock-liner cover are made of recycled materials. The design is inspired by ocean waves.
Bayern Munich Wore the Adidas x Parley soccer jerseys this weekend and Real Madrid will wear the jerseys when it plays Real Sporting de Gijon on Saturday, Nov. 26.
Eric Liedtke, Adidas group executive board member responsible for Global Brands, said in a statement: "This represents another step on the journey of adidas and Parley for the Oceans. We have not only managed to make footwear from recycled ocean plastic, but have also created the first jersey coming 100 percent out of the ocean. But we won't stop there. We will make one million pairs of shoes using Parley Ocean Plastic in 2017 -- and our ultimate ambition is to eliminate virgin plastic from our supply chain."
