Americans Invade an Aussie Christmas in Aldi's Holiday Ad From Down Under

Aldi may be more taking a more traditional approach to Christmas advertising in the U.K., but in Australia, the brand remains as provocative and un-whimsical as you can get in its holiday spot.

The retailer has played with the idea of the "perfect Aussie Christmas" before and now takes the theme one step further as a household of festive sweater-wearing Amerians called the "Tinkletons" invade an Australian household telling them how not to do Christmas. As they descend with tinsel, reindeer and fake snow, they pop up creepily all over the house, scolding the family for BBQ-ing prawns on Christmas day, inappropriately summery clothing and hanging out in swimwear. But then, there's a twist, as the American kids start to rebel; turns out they like pools and hate skis after all.

The spot is by BMF Sydney and was directed by Nick Ball at Finch. BMF creative director Alex Derwin said in a statement: "To an outsider, an Aussie Christmas feels weird and wrong, but when you get used to the sunburn and speedos you realize just how special it is. It's an insight we've used before, but this year we've put it on steroids. The Tinkletons are a device that allow us to show the 'Perfect Aussie Christmas' through a new lens. An all-singing and dancing, theatrical new lens."
