African health development charity AMREF is asking people to donate their Facebook or Twitter status to African mothers in honor of U.K.. Mothers' Day on Sunday, April 3. Facebook users can also change their profile picture via a Facebook app, or tweet #StatusofAfrica to draw attention to its aim to train more midwives in Africa, saving maternal lives.
This is the second iteration of the campaign launched last year by BBH London, which reached out to 'mommy bloggers' as part of the campaign, which is also supported by celebrities including the actress Fay Ripley. They will help highlight that every year 280,000 mothers die unnecessarily in pregnancy and childbirth because they lack basic medical care.
