Ad Underlines Environmental Credentials While Taking Swipe at Rival

Some would say Earth Day is all about championing the enviroment and uniting with others. But Apple turns the international celebration into an opportunity to swipe at its rival Samsung in a full-page print ad running in newspapers today.

The ad, which is running in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, British newspapers The Guardian and Metro and in some German papers, features the headline, "There are some ideas we want every company to copy" -- a thinly-veiled reference to Apple's ongoing legal battle with Samsung.

The copy continues: "There's one area where we actually encourage others to imitate us. When everyone makes the environment a priority, we all benefit."

The ad goes on to underline Apple's environmental credentials: "We'd be more than happy to see every data centre fuelled by 100 per cent renewable energy sources. And we eagerly await the day when every product is made without the harmful toxins we have removed from ours." Apple declined to say whether the ad was made in-house or out of TBWA/Media Arts Lab.

Yesterday, Apple unveiled a new section on its site touting its sustainibility objectives as well as a spot, featuring the voice of CEO Tim Cook, which also pushes environmental concerns.
