At #2 in Print/Outdoor/Design, the Sochi Olympics became the forum for this innovative selfie installation via architect/designer Asif Khan and Russian design firm Megafon. The outdoor effort allowed visitors at Olympic Park to take self portraits that would then be replicated on a giant kinetic facade. The effort went on to win the Innovation Grand Prix at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity.
British architect and designer Asif Khan conceived this project that transforms selfies taken by visitors to the Sochi Olympics into gigantic 3D projections. The 3D selfies appear on the kinetic facade of a 2,000 square meter cube in the Olympic Park in Sochi; visitors scan their face, then check the schedule to see when it will appear. The technology used to create the portraits consists of 11,000 mechanical actuators within the pavilion's facade behind a stretchy fabric membrane.
The project went on to earn the Innovation Grand Prix at the 2014 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. Read more about the Innovation win at Adage.com.
