Ahead of French Elections, This 'Social Board Game' Draws Attention to Inequality

'Social Experiment' Exposes Kids' Reactions to Unfairness in Society

Ahead of the French elections on May 7, France's Association Observatoire des Inégalités is highlighting inequality in French society with a "social experiment" video in which it asks a group of children to play Monopoly -- but with skewed rules.

The film, by Herezie, changes the rules so that, for example, one girl collects less money than the boys, a boy on crutches is barred from buying railway stations, another can only buy in certain areas and one kid has to play with dice that only have 1s. These unfairnesses highlight the gender pay gap in France, a fact that only 30% of railway stations are accessible, and that disadvantaged children fare worse at school and are more likely to be convicted of crimes. However, the kids aren't told this and react with outrage and disbelief.

Herezie Group Executive Creative Director Baptiste Clinet explained in statement. "More than ever, following the first round of the French elections, we all need to face the issue of inequality in France. To express this issue in the most simple way -- that everyone can understand -- this social experiment films the reaction of the kids when faced with inequality. This should be a call-to-arms for all of us to not accept inequality as adults."
