B-Cycle: B-Cycle

Crispin, Humana and Trek Bicycle bring bike sharing to the States.

On Earth Day, April 22, B-Cycle will finally become a reality. Denver, Colorado will be the launch city for the bike-sharing program, developed by Crispin Porter + Bogusky, Trek Bicycles and insurance company Humana. 500 B-Cycles at 50 B-stations will be available throughout the city as an alternative to cards for short trips.

Each bike is outfitted with computers that track mileage, calories burned and amount of carbon offset. Users register at the B-Cycle website in order to check out bikes. There, they can montior their own fitness and see their contributions to the city's greening efforts. The newly formed nonprofit Denver Bike Sharing will manage the program.

The B-Cycle website also features a Who Wants It More tracking map, showing where the service is most in demand throughout the country. It allows visitors to input their own zip codes and rally for their own B-Cycle program in their respective communities.

Hum! This concept is call Bixi and exist in Montreal for 1 year now. Sorry but nothing new here : (

I saw the launch on t.v. during lunch. I think it is ill conceived. It will NEVER last. Especially in the U.S. The bikes will eventually fall apart and they won't have the money to keep them maintained. They will also have a problem with theft. Not only from the stations but also if someone parks it outside a shop, visits the shop and when they return the bike has been stolen. They will also eventually be sued. Someone will get in an accident on a poorly maintained bike (with a broken reflector or something) and they will sue the crap out of Crispin Porter. I would NOT want to have a stake in that business. One of the big "creative" "idea" guys at Crispin Porter probably visited Europe or Japan and thought it would be all hot good to import the idea. WRONG! Our geography does not support the concept. The only people that MIGHT use it are tourists and we don't have enough of them to make it profitable. I wish that ideas like this WOULD work but ALL our cities here are designed for automobiles. Their time would be better spent on trying to change the way cities are planned. And what's with the visuals in the commercial? Don't the "ad" people know that bicycles are considered vehicles and technically they are not allowed on sidewalks? Looks like the research department fumbled the ball on that one.

Rated 0.50 There is a far more intelligent system out there, it's called "callabike" by "Deutsche Bahn" and is available in every major city in germany. The great thing about it: You can pick up and return your bike at every crossing all over the town. You don't need any stations or certain places, you just go to the website or use the iphone application and search for the next bike near you, call the number which is mentioned on the bike and you're set to go. This B-cycle thing is kind of static and inflexible compared to callabike.

Rated 2.00 It's great that they did this. It's about time someone did in the US. I hear Chicago isn't far behind. But it is a parody system of dozens of other cities so don't understand why it's on the front page of creativity. I wonder, say, if Trumpet did this in New Orleans would it have been featured here? Probably not. Just saying.
