Best of 2016 No. 10 Print/OOH/Design -- Burger King Tries to Scare Customers by Dressing Up as McDonald's for Halloween

Store in New York Gets a Frightening Makeover

Editor's Pick

Through New Year's, we'll be counting down the best work of the year in TV/Film/Branded Content, Print/Outdoor/Design and Interactive/Integrated (IX) as our picks of the day.

At #10 in our print/outdoor/design category is Burger King's attempt to dress itself up as the scariest thing possible for Halloween - McDonald's. This truly original stunt took place in New York, and also included special packaging to "disguise" its Whoppers.

Original story:

What's the scariest thing Burger King could do for Halloween? Dress itself up as McDonald's, apparently.

In a stunt by agency David Miami, Burger King wrapped an entire store in Queens, New York, in a ghostly white sheet emblazoned with the words "McDonald's."

The sign up front was also covered with another ghostly sheet and showed the message: "BOOOOO! Just kidding, we still flame-grill our burger. Happy Halloween." It also created special boxes to "disguise" its Whoppers by making them look like its rival's packaging.

Burger King describes the stunt as a "friendly joke" on its rival -- but we wonder if McDonald's will come back with its own Halloween effort?
