Men Discuss Their Depression in Unexpected Situations in This Thought-Provoking Spot

David Allain's Film for CALM Contrasts Inner Thoughts With Appearances

Editor's Pick

In this film from U.K. organization CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably,) men openly discuss their depression and suicidal thoughts in incongruous situations -- like making a speech at a wedding, on the soccer field and while kissing a girlfriend.

Written and directed by Hungry Man's David Allain, the film emphasizes the gulf between some men's behaviour on the surface and what may be going on inside. Mr. Allain constructed the film around the actual words of real men that have used CALM's services when battling with depression and fighting to resist suicide. The organization operates a helpline and webchat services as well as publishing articles, stories and experiences, written by men and for men, on its website and issuing a free quarterly men's magazine, CALMzine, through retailers, clubs and gyms.

Mr Allain added: "I've been that person that says, 'But he seemed fine the other week.' It shook me to my core --the dreadful realisation of being too late to mollify the inner conflict of someone you were close to. So I jumped at this opportunity when it arose, hoping never to experience that feeling of being too late to listen or do something again. It's vital to listen while we can, and to encourage others to see how talking really can save lives.'
