In Peru, Billboard Acts As Water Supply

Owner Clear Channel makes water by capturing humidity in the air

In Peru, Clear Channel has launched the world's first ever billboard to create drinking water from humidity in the air. The billboard is the product of a partnership between the outdoor advertising owner, the University of Engineering and Technology (UTEC) in Lima, media agency BNP and advertising agency, Mayo Publicidad.

It sits above the skyline in Bujama, a small village community just south of Lima where some residents have no access to a clean water supply. The climate is humid, so the billboard uses a panel to trap humidity in the air. This extracts water vapor that's stored in tanks at the top, then the water is filtered before flowing down a pipe to a tap. Since the billboard's arrival at the end of last year, Clear Channel says residents of Bujama now have access to an average of 96 litres of drinking water a day.
