Today on its Journey blog, Coca-Cola announced that it was going 4K with its iconic 1971 "Hilltop" ad in a new remastered version that appeared on YouTube today.
Created by McCann-Erickson and its CD Bill Backer in 1971, the spot has continued to make the rounds over the years in pop culture in various forms. In 2005, for example, Crispin, Porter & Bogusky took the idea to the streets in the "Chilltop" remake, while more recently, it punctuated the series finale of Mad Men, turning the spot into a viral hit 44 years after its debut.
In her blog post, Sarah Traverso, Coke's group director of multimedia productions and agency operations, noted that the brand was re-mastering and color-correcting the classic for 4K television -- "In layman terms, that means I was preserving an iconic gem for a new generation," she said. But judging from how well it was received by Don Draper fans last year, it seems it's doing just fine in its "original" form.
