Thirty years ago, Coca-Cola made what was arguably its most monumental screw-up when it ditched its classic formula for New Coke. To mark the anniversary, the brand's archivists dug deep, deep into the Coca-Cola mailbin to unearth the "best" worst hate mail it received after the misstep.
A selection of gems:
"I have tasted the 'new taste' of Coke. Personally I think it SUCKS!!!!. I think it tastes like Pepsi."
"The only reason I can think of as to why you changed the taste of Coke so drastically is that you guys bought out Pepsi -- and are now trying to get people to drink it!!"
"Coke was it. Tried it. Didn't like it. Keep your coupon. It's not worth the paper it is written on."
However, there was at least one fan of the new formula, who wrote in a page framed by bright yellow stars, "Dear Coke, I really like your 'new taste' Coke. I will always be a Coke lover. Keep it up!"
You can tell by the vitriol spewed how dedicated a bunch Coke fans are. The brand currently has about 89.7 Likes on Facebook and 2.94 million Facebook followers. You can only imagine the outrage had Coke changed its formula today.
