Not for the Squeamish: Women Share 'First Time' Stories

Not That 'First Time,' Another One

You might want to click away if you're the squeamish type. If not, it's likely you'll enjoy this charming film, for underwear brand Dear Kate. Directed by Mary Harron of production company Process, it features women talking very candidly about their "first time," but it's not the "first time" you think it is.

The women open up about their inaugural visits from Aunt Flo, going into sometimes graphic detail about "pool" in a chair, making pads out of Bounty, the "Quicker Picker Upper" and "melted candy" in underthings. Their delivery is so lighthearted that even the most uncomfortable moments sound pretty delightful.

Dear Kate is a startup founded by four women, and like Helloflo before it, aims to eliminate the social stigma around talking about menstruation. The brand sells underwear made of a unique "Underlux" fabric, designed to protect against stains better than your average panties. Its mission is to "give women the confidence to do anything by equipping them with apparel that's up for the challenge."

The "First Time" film is accompanied by a gallery on the Dear Kate site where people can share their own first period stories.

The film's director Ms. Harron has tackled tough subjects with skill before, and on a bigger screen. Her credits include "American Psycho," "I Shot Andy Warhol," "The Moth Diaries" and "The Notorious Bettie Page."
