Gifts Speak in the Voices of Ewan McGregor, Jennifer Saunders in This Holiday Spot

Debenhams Ad Matches Celebrity Voices to Products

Editor's Pick

In its 2016 holiday campaign, U.K. retailer Debenhams puts the emphasis on gifts rather than going down the heartwarming storytelling route. But there's a twist -- the gifts themselves address the viewers in the voices of well-known celebrities.

Ewan McGregor and Jennifer Saunders ("Absolutely Fabulous") both lend their distinctive tones to stylish bags (for men and women) while other products, including lingerie and sparkly boots, speak in the voices of "Doctor Who" actress Billie Piper and "Great British Bake-Off" presenter Mel Giedroyc (instantly familiar to British TV viewers). Thanks to the caliber of the celebrities involved -- Saunders' Ab Fab accents perfect for the leopard print handbag, for example -- it works.

The campaign, by JWT London, runs across TV, radio, outdoor, digital and print kicks off with six TV ad concepts broadcast as 10 and 20 second executions. Chris Floyd at Ultd directed the TV spots.
