Design Council: Design Out Crime Safer Pint Glass

Go ahead, have a brawl.

Editor's Pick

As part of its Design Out Crime initiative, the British Design Council commissioned design firm Design Bridge to come up with a shatter-resistant pint glass that would cause less injury during pub fights or alcohol-related accidents.

Working with research obtained by InnovationRCA, the business network of the Royal College of Art, DB came up with two designs: Glass Plus features a transparent bio-resin coating on its inside that binds together resultant shards should it break, thus reducing the likelihood of injury and Twin Wall, a vessel that binds together two super thin layers of glass, similar in fashion to car windshields. The bonded layers make the glass harder to break, but if it does, the pieces remain contained within a layer of resin.

The Design Council is already in talks with major pubs in the U.K. to demo the Glass Plus prototype within a year, and it's also in talks with manufactures on large scale production for Twin Wall.
