This time, area/code changes course from the California coast to the Great Barrier Reef, where registered players become virtual marine biologists, join one of three organizations, captain a boat, accrue research funding and compete against others in tracking ten GPS-tagged Tiger sharks and ten Grey Reef sharks.
Along with the location change, Sharkrunners 2.0 includes a community section dubbed "Sharkrunners HQ", where registered players can find info on the latest version's features, create or view profiles, check out leaderboards, read actual shark-related news and create their own discussion/strategy groups.
In addition, area/code developed the "Ocean Reclamation Initiative", which is essentially an in-game effort that focuses on fictional ocean preservation. Here, Sharkrunners compete to see who is more committed to conserving the sharks' natural habitat by donating whatever amount of their accrued research funding to the ORI. Depending on how much you fork over, you could plant a flag as the largest donor in a specific zone of the ocean and "reclaim" it on behalf of your chosen organization.
