Just in time for Halloween, digital agency Firstborn has created an augmented reality app guaranteed to give New Yorkers the chills.

"Gruesome Gotham" is an AR scavenger hunt that reveals a map of chilling murders across the city: so whatever location you are in, you can unlock a narrated scene of a famous murder in NYC crime history. They include the infamous shooting of Bill the Butcher, the murder in Tribeca of Bartholomew Burke and the scene in Little Italy when Maria Barbella sliced open the throat of her lover Domenico Cataldo because he refused to marry her.

There is also a "read all about it" newspaper section of the app so users can learn more about the crimes they're witnessing. An ominous narrative voice accompanies each scene to explain the killings in detail as you view.

Created with the help of Apple's ARKit, is free to download for iPhones only either in the app store or through the game's microsite.
