To promote its new supernatural thriller, "The Forest," directed by industry vet Jason Zada and starring Natalie Dormer and Taylor Kinney, Focus Features has created a creepy online experience centered around Japan's infamous Aokigahara Forest, also known as the Suicide Forest. The film, which launched in U.S. theaters on January 8, follows an American girl (Dormer) in search of her twin sister who has mysteriously disappeared within the Forest.
Production company Unit9 developed the 360 degree immersive experience, "Escape the Forest," for view with Google Cardboard, or on mobile, tablet or desktop. It invites users to enter the infamous forest, which is commonly associated with demons in Japanese mythology, in an attempt to find their friends and escape alive. Users must make their way through levels by locating a series of clues scattered throughout the forest. Once completed, the forest disappears and users can share images across social media and enter a sweepstakes to win a trip to Japan with a friend.
