Momentum is building behind the movement to get more recognition for female directors. Alma Ha'rel's Free the Bid initiative already being embraced by clients, agencies and production companies. Meanwhile, director Jessica Sanders has partnered with Refinery29, the WPP-owned fashion and lifestyle media company, to direct a short film for its programming slate ShatterBox Anthology, profiling some of Fox's top female talent.
The film, seen here, was created in collaboration with Fox's Inaugural Global Directing Initiative. It features 20 directors including Jennifer Arnold, Steph Green, Maggie Kiley and Sanders herself, with each explaining what some their work is about. Undoubtedly inspiring for up and coming directorial talent, it ends with a reminder of the still-depressing statistics: only 7% of Hollywood directors are female, only 17% of TV directors are female and only 2% are women of color.
