Mother New York creative director/partner Michael Ian Kaye designed these "Safety Matches" to help drive the campaign against hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," The matches promote, a group of citizens seeking to educate the public on the risks of gas drilling, especially hydraulic fracturing in New York state and the surrounding region.

The effort was inspired by the Sundance-winning documentary Gasland, directed by Josh Fox, about the U.S.'s attempt to become an energy superpower through fracking. A key scene shows a homeowner igniting contaminated well water coming from his own kitchen faucet.
