Who Says Death Has to Be Depressing? Funeral Home Depicts Passing as One Big Party

Portuguese Ad Agency Bar Puts Positive Spin on Category

Thoughts of death can be, well, morbid, which is probably why funeral homes seem loath to advertise on television. Lisbon-based ad agency BAR, however, tackles the topic in a way that might keep viewers from touching that dial.

The online ad, for Funeraria Funalcoitao, a Portuguese funerary service provider, approaches the subject in a celebratory way, reminding those watching that a burial is a tribute. Funeral-goers carry a pleased-looking corpse in an acrobatic and confetti-filled procession, giving a decidedly light air to the typically grim topic. "You can't refuse anything to a dead man," the voiceover says, backed by a triangle dinging gleefully on a whimsical track.

The ad debuted online last month and as web popularity grew, so did the media attention -- the clip has since aired in national news segments in Portugal.

A sad and dramatic procession is transformed into a moving tribute. After all, this is what the dead man wanted.
