Great art, via Google

If you love Van Gogh but can't afford the plane fare to Amsterdam, Google Art Project has the answer.

Google's new website allows art lovers to visit the great art museums of the world, virtually allowing them to view over a thousand works of art.

It uses Google Street View technology to take visitors 'inside' 17 museums, including the Tate Britain in London, Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MoMA in New York and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.

As well as experiencing 360-degree images of the interior of galleries, visitors can zoom in for a close up of an artist's brushwork, using super high resolution photo-capturing technology. Once inside an image, an info panel lets them read more about an artwork, find more works by that artist and watch related YouTube videos. A 'Create an Artwork Collection' feature allows them to save specific views of any of the artworks and build their own personalized collection, complete with comments before sharing it friends on the web.
