Google/The Israel Museum, Jerusalem: The Dead Sea Scrolls Online

Zoom in on the Dead Sea Scrolls

Published on Sep 27, 2011

Editor's Pick

For years they were the preserve of biblical scholars, but now, anyone can look at them in detail; Google has teamed up with the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, to put the ancient Dead Sea Scrolls online.

You can now interact with the oldest known biblical manuscripts in existence, by going to a website containing five digitized scrolls. The high resolution photographs, taken by Ardon Bar-Hama, are up to 1,200 megapixels, so viewers can see even the most minute details in the parchment. As well as zooming in, you can get Hebrew-to-English translations from the text - and even leave your own comments, if you feel so inspired.
