Editor's Pick

Newsgathering enters a new era today as The Guardian opens up its daily newslist to the general public for a two-week experiment.

The newspaper is publishing a live account of its news diary online, so readers can see the scheduled announcements, events and speeches that make up the news day as well as any breaking news. They can read the editor's opinions about the stories in a Twitter feed opposite, and add their own opinions to the conversation by tweeting to the hashtag #opennews. The Guardian will retweet a selection of readers' tweets.

While the newspaper will, of course, still be keeping exclusives and confidential information close to its chest, it describes the open newslist as 'an experiment in openness'. Whatever, it should shed some light on whether crowdsourced newsgathering can really work for a newspaper.
