The recent Rolling Stone thousandth-issue blockbuster inspired a poster from JBL, sent to the editors of the magazine, that makes the 12 days of Christmas look like child's play. "The brief was simple," says TBWA/Chiat/Day creative director Jack Fund. "How do you send an epic thank you from one music fan to another? We figured what better way for JBL to salute the 1,000 issues of Rolling Stone than with a countdown of 1,000 things about the music scene that make it what it is." So it's more or less a random collection of pop cult-related things, and you can bet "we had a lot of fun with the individual numbers," says Fund. "For instance, '666 headless bats' refers to Ozzy Osbourne." We didn't know he ate that many, no wonder he has so much trouble talking. And "17 minutes of you know, that song" is Iron Butterfly's "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," but you probably had to be there. Not so with "4 blokes from Liverpool who changed the world forever," but as Fund notes, "not every number has a specific meaning, but sometimes just being able to say '698 rump shakes' in an ad is a reward all in itself." Though he calls it an ad, in the interests of clarity we note that this didn't appear in the thousandth issue but is simply a poster made for RS staffers; and we split it in half in the PDF for legibility.
