KFC's 'Lie Detector' Spot Is a Nod to Its (Creepy) Past

The Spot from Wieden & Kennedy Is a Lighter Take on a Horror-Inspired '60s Version

Norm Macdonald is back as the "real Colonel Sanders" for another KFC spot from Wieden & Kennedy Portland, and this time, he has to undergo a lie detector test to prove what he's saying about the finger lickin' good chicken is true.

Ad Age previously reported the commercials with Mr. Macdonald are a nod to KFC's spots of the past, and this one has a precursor from the '60s. In the old version, the Colonel is strapped to a chair in a dark room, surrounded by terrifying women who want the secret recipe for his fried chicken. The lighting and camera movement appear to be inspired by horror films, and the spooky acting could elicit nightmares. (Watch at your own risk.)

The new version, directed by Ulf Johansson, is a lighter take on the concept. But it still leaves you wondering: who is the real colonel?
