The medium was the message and vice versa when London's Lunar BBDO recently advertised for a typographer/designer. Three print ads and posters "were created to appeal only to that narrow target," says Lunar's Daryl Corps, so "the copy is written in Webdings, Zapf Dingbats and Wingdings — picture fonts that would be meaningless to most people, but recognizable to the discerning typographer. With the addition of nods to the classic design of Bauhaus, Josef Muller-Brockman and Jan Tschichold, and media placement around art colleges and in the typography press," he notes, the ads netted some 30 replies — and a hire. See the PDF for keys to the symbols, but here's the cheat sheet: "Mac-based typographer/designer wanted. Award-winning ad agency seeks help with its Mac/design output. West End space provided in exchange for negotiable hours of work. Contact Daryl Corps on 07802 499 658."
