Teacher Luzviminda Santiago wakes up at 4 a.m. to commute four hours to her job teaching science at Makati High School in the Philippines. She's strict but loving, the kind of person who lent a needy child public transport fare to get to school. Former students still remember and care about her.
After 30 years in the classroom, Ms. Santiago reaches mandatory retirement age in July, and she's going to miss her students. In this video by McDonald's and Leo Burnett Manila, her former pupils surprise her in the classroom one morning with a McDonald's breakfast and coffee.
The campaign was part of National Breakfast Day, an annual McDonald's activation in the Philippines, with stores giving out free breakfast sandwiches. McDonald's brought food to teachers at school; the restaurant's celebrity endorsers went to their old schools to see their teachers, too, getting wide media coverage.
McDonald's had another education-themed story from the Philippines in December, about a boy whose photo went viral after someone snapped his picture while he studied at night on the sidewalk by the light of its golden arches.
