Author Michael Chabon’s newest work, “Maps and Legends,” features a playful, multi-layer book jacket with Viking and mythic illustrations by Jordan Crane. The three overlapping jackets are different sizes and colors and, die-cut at varying heights, fit together to create the texture of landscape from foreground to background: the turbulent blue sea, lush green forest and brown mountains in the distance. A window cut through all three displays the title stamped on gold foil.
The unusual execution comes out of McSweeney's Publishing, a house known for its inventive, artistic print. Managing Editor Eli Horowitz says the concept came together as a mix of Crane’s printing genius and the desire to visually capture Chabon’s sprawling enthusiasm.
