Milwaukee Police Department: Milwaukee Police Department Website

A beautiful government website.

Editor's Pick

We never thought we'd say this, but check out the excellent and design-minded website of the Milwaukee Police Department. Created by Cramer-Krasselt Milwaukee and developed by LISS Interactive, MilwaukeePoliceNews.com is the first of its kind for a law enforcement agency, and presents need-to-know news via a gorgeous interface.

An extension of the MPD's "Be a Force" campaign, which was launched in 2009 to ask the community to work with the police for crime prevention, the site is a nice way to engage and empower citizens looking for more information so they can actually do that. Live streams of crime rates, profiles on officers and fallen heroes and noteworthy news are all updated round-the-clock, and are easy to find and understand. "Truth is, 99% of government websites are no pleasure to visit or navigate, with key information scattered or buried. But [Milwaukee Police Chief Edward A. Flynn] gave us a rare opportunity: the chance to turn bureaucracy into a thing of beauty," said Cramer-Krasselt Milwaukee ECD Chris Jacobs. The agency worked on the campaign pro-bono. Bold 3D photography was used to create a parallax effect that adds some depth and movement to pictures on the screen. "In the end, we created a government social website that doesn't feel anything like a government social website," said Jacobs.

Our only complaint? It makes even the "Most Wanted" look like models in a fashion spread.
