Today, Monotype Imaging announced the release of its beta for Web Fonts, which makes more than 2,000 fonts available to web designers. The selection includes typefaces like Helvetica, Frutiger and Univers available for the first time as web fonts, and by the site's commercial launch the company expects to make available a total of 7,000 fonts.

The announcement opens up a whole new world of possibilities for web developers/designers, who until now have been limited to "safe fonts" like Arial, Verdana or Times.

The implications for web design are huge. "What you will start to finally see is the intricacy of typography in the digital space catching up with print," explains Shu Lai, an interactive CD at Pereira O'Dell who also happens to be VP of the Society of Typographic Aficionados. "Web designers have been constrained by selection, technology and standards for so long that this new outlet for creativity will explode very quickly."
