George Clooney made his first Nespresso spot nearly a decade ago, with a cringeworthy commercial in which two women list the attributes they are looking for in what the actor assumes is a man: "intense," "very rich", "deep and sensual." Turns out, however, they're talking about coffee.
But the "What else?" campaign has hit its stride of late, using Clooney's famously self-deprecating humor to counterbalance its cheesier elements. A new spot running across Europe and Australia features Jack Black learning from Clooney how Nespresso can help him charm the ladies.
Set in a beautiful Italian villa on Lake Como, it shows Black, clutching a Nespresso, approach a glamorous woman and ask, "Nespresso. What more?" misquoting the campaign's line. Clooney turns up, says it right, and gets the girl.
Black is word perfect by the time the next attractive woman comes along, and this provides enough to secure romantic success, even though he slurps his coffee very loudly and introduces himself pretentiously as "Jackamo Blackamo."
Previous star turns for the campaign by McCann Worldgroup have included Matt Damon, John Malkovich and Jean Dujardin, who won an Oscar for his role in "The Artist," but this new spot by the network's London office is the first to really get it right.
