Who's Watching Whom in This Clever Newport Beach Film Festival Spot?

Disconcerting Short Explores the Voyeurism of Cinema

This year's trailer for the Newport Beach Film Festival explores the voyeuristic art of cinema with a clever film in which everyone is watching someone else.

The short, which has some disconcertingly edgy moments, opens on a scene of two lovers, but it's soon apparent that they are being watched by two horrified children, who are peering through a window of a tiny house. Not only that, the kids themselves are in a tiny house, being watched by a particularly creepy-looking guy. And it so it goes on... but we won't spoil the ending.

The film is by agency RPA (which has previous created some other great shorts for the festival, including 2013's Mandible) and it was directed by Jogger.

"'We're Being Watched' communicates how real life informs what happens on screen and vice-versa, as film is an exercise in capturing the human experience and the boundaries of human imagination," said RPA Co-Founder and Director of Marketing Todd Quartararo in a statement. "There is a fantastic opportunity to reimagine how we perceive reality and our traditional expectation of the way it unfolds before us."

The Festival will run throughout Newport Beach and Costa Mesa, beginning April 21 and concluding April 28, screening more than 350 films.
