Nike Thanks Baltimore for Saving the Air Force 1 Sneaker

Campaign by W+K Features Murals, a Comic Book and a Custom Shoe

Nike is celebrating the 35th anniversary of its Air Force 1 sneaker by thanking the city of Baltimore for saving it.

In 1984, two years after its launch, Nike was planning to discontinue production of the shoe, but thanks to Baltimore's enthusiastic wearers, the AF-1 continued to be made. To mark their efforts, Wieden + Kennedy Portland has conceived a campaign featuring the art of alternative comics artist Ed Piskor. He created a comic book that tells the AF1 story, illlustrations from which have been hand-painted on the bricks of the city's original Cinderella Shoe Store.

The campaign also paid tribute to the three retailers that helped save the AF1 by creating plaques at the original locations of Downtown Locker Room, Charley Rudo Sports and Cinderella Shoes (which also hosted a block party), while benches were placed throughout the city reminding people that they saved the AF1. Nike also created a custom Air Force 1, featuring Piskor's art on the box, that will also be sold exclusively at Downtown Locker Room.
