We've just stepped into the future of shoelaces with Nike's introduction of HyperAdapt 1.0, the brand's first shoe to feature what its calls "adaptive" lacing.
When athletes step into the shoe, their heel will activate a sensor that triggers the lacing system to tighten automatically. They can then easily tighten and loosen the laces to their liking via two buttons on the side.
The new design is meant to address some of athletes' biggest concerns: the need for functional simplicity, and the need to make quick "micro-adjustments" to footwear during training or in the heat of competition.
The new product was borne of an idea conceived by Nike VP-Design and Special Projects Tinker Hatfield and realized with the help of Senior Innovator Tiffany Beers and President/CEO Mark Parker.
Through multiple trials and prototypes in 2013, the team finally arrived at an "underfoot lacing mechanism" that would form the basis of the final design.
The next step to realization was the creation of a real self-lacing Nike Mag. The fictional shoe that had appeared in "Back to the Future" but debuted as a real-life, limited edition product on October 21, 2015, to coincide with the film's anniversary.
The product debuted the adaptive lacing technology as part of a limited-edition release, but a more widely available and "more technical, sport version" originally conceived by its creators is realized in the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0.
The shoe will be available in three colors and only to Nike+ members starting in the Holiday 2016 season.
