TBWA/Chiat/Day/L.A. creatives Mahmud Husain and Brad Beerbohm were "walking down the street when we saw a brand new black sports car parked," they recount. "It was slightly dusty, as most black cars get in the city, and when we came closer we saw a girl's name, a phone number and a heart written on the hood." Unfortunately, the car belonged to neither of them, but nonetheless "it brought out an immediate smile," they say. Later, "when the assignment came up to do a Z ad for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, we figured this would be the perfect thing. After looking at page after page of what guys typically drool over, we thought it might be fitting to portray what gets a similar reaction, especially in L.A., out of the ladies." That must be why they call it la-la land. So maybe it's not even a stretch that the Z has three numbers scrawled on it. When you call the numbers you get a Z brochure offer prefaced by answering machine-style babe banter from a trio of gas 'n' go glamour gals. But these phone come-ons weren't easy. "During recording, we found that no matter how hard they try, all women who attempt to sound sexy wind up sounding alike, so we had to rerecord and really mix up the women's nationalities and ethnicities," note the creatives. As Lisa says on one of the messages, "Your cool performance alloy wheels have been spinning through mah mind all day." It's not often you get to write auto porn.
