Looks like the U.K. doesn't have a monopoly on heartwarming holiday spots -- this year has seen a Lottery ad from Spain strike a chord with viewers worldwide, and now here's this gorgeously animated tearjerker from Germany.
The spot, from mail order company Otto and agency Heimat Berlin, sees an old man in a post office find an old letter, wedged in a floorboard, addressed only to "Grandpa." In a flashback, he remembers that many years ago a little boy had handed it to him. When he reads it, he realizes the boy, Tommy, was writing to his Grandpa in heaven, reminding him that he had wanted a bike. So he begins an epic journey across seas and snowfields to deliver a bike to the (now grown-up) Tommy, with a note saying "I'm sorry this took so long." Psyop in New York is responsible for direction and the fabulous animation.
To promote the campaign, a 20-second trailer is currently being aired on all major German TV channels. It drives viewers to a microsite that hosts the full-length film as well as a starry sky that users can fill with their stories of wishes that have been fulfilled.
