Pirelli beams the spotlight directly on Hollywood for its 2017 calendar, bringing in famed photographer Peter Lindbergh to shoot a line-up of celebrated actresses, including seven Oscar winners: Kate Winslet, Lupita Nyong'O, Nicole Kidman, Helen Mirren, Lea Seydoux, Robin Wright, Rooney Mara, Uma Thurman, Penelope Cruz, Julianne Moore, Charlotte Rampling, Alicia Vikander, Zhang Ziyi and Jessica Chastain. The one non-Hollywood subject is Anastacia Ignatova, a professor at Moscow State University whom Mr. Lindbergh met last year.
Lindbergh returns to the tire company's project for a third time -- the only photographer to do so. His shot his first in 1996, followed by the calendar's 50th anniversary edition in 2002. It was then that he introduced actresses to the annual for the first time.
The latest edition seems to continue the calendar's trend toward featuring more diverse beauties, with the stars appearing sparely, or barely adorned and representing ages ranging from 20s to the 30s.
Last year's calendar was shot by Annie Leibovitz and featured "real women beauties" from entertainment and beyond, with photos of director Ava Duvernay, writer Fran Liebowitz, Yoko Ono, blogger/actress Tavi Gevinson -- as well as a much-talked about image of comedian/actress Amy Schumer.
Mr. Lindbergh told Vogue that the new calendar is "a counter message to [the industry's] fake beauty ideal...We go a big step further. This Pirelli Calendar is a very important one, because you don't have to do nudity anymore, you're not under pressure to do anything with your body, which is great. Beauty today is really twisted, for commercial reasons, so people think beautiful is what you see in advertising and in magazines -- all these retouched women. You have to be perfect, you have to be thin, you have to be young -- you have to be all this, and this is bullshit. It's so awful, and this image of beauty is imposed on people for commercial reasons, because you can't make money [if] you say to someone, 'You know what, you're beautiful the way you are.'"
While the calendar won't be out for a few months, the brand recently debuted this teaser video featuring some behind-the-scenes footage with Lindbergh and the talent.
