England Gets a 'Realistic' (Sad) Euro Anthem, Courtesy of a Burger Brand

Droga5's Campaign for Rustlers Has Chesney Hawkes and Peter Shilton Sing Catchy Tune

It may not go down well with diehard England soccer fans, but many Brits will laugh out loud at this "realistic" Euro 2016 anthem, released by burger brand Rustlers.

The brand and agency Droga5 London engaged Chesney Hawkes, one time pin-up boy and one-hit wonder popstar from the '90s, and Peter Shilton, the most capped England player of all time, to sing a song whose lyrics reflect the reality -- England has not won a major tournament in 50 years.

Titled "Let's Be Realistic," its catchy chorus includes lines like "No trophies in half a century -- let's blame it on the ref or injury" as we see footage of despondent fans and reminders of the team's less than stellar performances over the past 50 years. Meanwhile, Shilton urges viewers to remember all the awesome things that England has done -- like inventing the jet engine, anasthetics, the World Wide Web and DNA sequencing -- asking, what does it matter if we lose one more time.

The video, directed by Big Red Button at Biscuit Filmworks, also shows us Hawkes and Shilton enjoying some Rustlers burgers, and there's a lyric thrown in about them too, but the branding isn't overt. Instead, the campaign, the first by Droga5 for the brand, is great fun, and given England has only managed a draw with Russia so far, the song could certainly catch on.
