A topical short film featuring a Mexican mother who buys her son a Donald Trump pinata has won five awards, including Best International New Director, for Sarah Clift at Ireland's Kinsale Sharks creative awards this past weekend.

The film, La Madre Buena (The Good Mother), sees the mother determined to get her son what he wants, despite her own hatred of Trump ("He's the devil,"). Her quest culminates in a motorcycle journey to a mysterious cave where she finds what she's looking for, followed by a ride back to town with the Trump effigy strapped to her back. Recreations of Trump speeches about Mexico (by a Trump impersonator) plays out in the background of the film, underlining the hurt felt by the Mexican people over some of his comments.

As well as Best International New Director, the film won Best International Short (under 5 minutes), Best Writing/Idea, Best Director and Best Casting at the awards on Saturday.

Clift launched her directorial career in 2015 after a career in agencies including as creative director at McCann London. She is also U.K. partner of Mexican production and production service company Madrefoca, and divides her time between London and Mexico.

She said in a statement: "The idea is a simple tale that focuses on things that are very important to me: the theme of strong women and making a beautiful portrait of Mexican people that has lately been downgraded, particularly in the U.S."
