Creator extraordinaire Josh Whedon has directed and produced a new video featuring a "shit-ton" of celebrities to encourage U.S. citizens to get out and vote, in an effort to stop, as he told Buzzfeed, the "orange Muppet Hitler."
Whedon created the PSA out of his production company Save the Day, described on its website as a "short-form digital production company dedicated to the idea that voting is a necessary and heroic act. That every voice in this wonderfully diverse nation should, and must, be heard."
The video, titled "Important," goes the well-worn cause marketing route of tapping oodles of celebrities (Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Don Cheadle, Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Keegan-Michael Kay, James Franco, Cobie Smulders, Rosie Perez, Martin Sheen, David Harbour, Jessie Williams, Neil Patrick Harris, Leslie Odom Jr. and yes, a shit-ton more) to stand before a camera and plead faux-earnestly with the audience to take action for a bigger cause -- like a "disease, or ecological crisis or a racist, abusive coward who could permanently damage the fabric of our society ... whose signature move is firing things."
It turns out, many of these ills against humanity can be found curdling in a single source, who (although he's never named directly ) it's safe to assume, is Donald Trump.
Mr. Whedon's approach proves he's an inveterate storyteller, mixing the self-referential and cheekiness with the authentic -- with the actors calling out their own, and the ad's, very deliberate moves, pointing out, for example, how "real" people are thrown in to drive the message home. And, there's even a funny twist (which we won't spoil here), which we may see borne out in Mark Ruffalo's next movie.
The Save the Day site connects people easily to voter registration outlets. And from the "Videos" link in the menu, it seems there will be more to come.
