If you're a fan of "The Sound of Music," the holiday spot from Sky Cinema this year may have you welling up.

While previous Christmas ads by the broadcaster have been VFX-heavy and seen people step into magical movie-themed worlds, his year, agency WCRS has gone for the simple, nostalgic tale of a mother and her daughter through the years watching a movie classic that's shown every year at Christmas (at least, in the U.K.).

We start with the mom and her four-year-old daughter in a somewhat retro living room, delighting in watching the film's "My Favourite Things" scene. As the years go by, they dance along with the music, the mom covers her daughter's eyes during the love scenes. Later, an embarrassed boyfriend sits through it too, as the teenage daughter cringes at her mom's dancing. Next, the mom is watching on her own, with the daughter away traveling the world. It's poignant--but wait, she's coming home for Christmas with her backpack and "The Sound of Music" is back on the agenda. Finally, she's got a daughter of her own sitting watching the movie with Grandma.

It's a simple, touching premise that rings true--and indeed, WCRS confirms it was based on the home rituals of WCRS creatives Alicia Job and Jessica Watson with their moms. It's also nicely crafted (with direction by Ben Liam Jones at Strange Love) with the details of the room, the TV and even the Christmas lights changing subtly but not too obviously over the decades.
